The Roybal Corporation designed the West Addition to the United States Mint which includes a public tour exit and an employee entrance and lounge.
The entrance completes a circle of five historic and modern expansions by enclosing an alley between those expansions. The design utilized complementary materials and scale to bring together disparate building designs and eras while providing a protected entrance / exit for employees and and exit for tour guests. A former manufacturing waste containment room was converted into a new employee lounge. Taking advantage of a 1919 clearstory, the basement space is now a highlight of the facility.
The character of the West Addition was carefully coordinated with State and local Historical Societies including the Denver Landmark Commission. The review committee praised the project for a creative design approach which successfully maintained the integrity of the historic facility.
